Roll a Joint – The Basics

He is a guide to rolling a basic single paper joint. Once you get this down, go forth and conquer the weed rolling advanced techniques… aka Marijuana Origami!

Step 1: Your Toking Tools

Weed
Papers
Card for roach
Grinder or Scissors
Poky
Lighter

Step 2: Prepare the Weed

Grind your weed, cut it with scissors or break it apart – this helps make it more pliable when rolling – Make sure you remove twigs and seeds. Twigs can rip the paper and are crap to smoke and the seeds pop when they get burned.

Step 3: Make the Roach – Optional

I like to make smallish roaches about 2-3cm in width and about 1cm in length for a small, single paper joint. Roll the card up so that it has a little spring to it. The shape and size of a roach generally comes down to your own smoking preferance. You will find what works for you.

Step 4: Add the Weed

Either flatten out the paper on a hard surface or you can place it in the papers packet as a holder, add the weed to the paper, try and sprinkle it evenly along the length of the paper.

Step 5: The Roll

Pick up the paper with both hands, generally in-between your thumbs and index fingers and slowly roll the paper back and forth so the weed starts to even out and look like the shape of the joint you are trying to roll. I will sometimes roll, then hold the joint with one hand or out it own and move the weed with my finger if it is lumpy in some areas. Basically try and get the weed to even out into the shape of the joint before tucking the paper.

Step 6: Add the Roach – Optional

I prefer smoking with a roach as it wastes less weed, I don’t burn my fingers trying to smoke the j down to nothing, I don’t get weed in my mouth and its easier to roll.

Move the weed at the end of the joint up just a little and add the roach. push the weed back so its nice and flush – you don’t want a gap between the weed and joint coz you’ll have a floppy joint and no-one wants a floppy joint.

You can also add the roach after you have rolled the joint, but I personally find this kind of fiddly, especially if I’m already high : )

Step 7: The Tuck

The hardest part of the joint rolling process.

The Joint Rolling Dictionary

The Roach:

A roach doesn’t filter the smoke (although you can buy little filters, but I don’t’ want my weed smoke filters, but it defiantly makes for a smother smoke – Check out our toking tolls section). The roach allows the smoke to flow, stops the end of the joint getting soggy and means you don’t have to burn the shit out of your lips or fingers trying to get that last hit.

The shape and size of a roach is basically personal taste and smoking preference. A smaller, thinner roach can sometimes clog and a wider one can be harsh to smoke and let weed pass through. You want something kinda in the middle.

Ideally plain thin unprinted card is best as some inks can emit fumes when burned – but I try not to smoke to much of the roach anyway. Also avoid using your own business cards if you don’t want people to know you smoke…. or atlas the part with your name and number on. I normally make roaches about 2-3 cm by 1cm for smaller single paper joints and larger for larger joints

The Grinder:

A weed grinder or herb grinder is a cylindrical contraption with two halves that serrate and have sharp teeth or pegs inside. You basically put your weed into the grinder and the teeth are aligned in such a way that it sheds the weed inside when turned. The shredded weed drops down via small holes into a compartment at the bottom which you unscrew to remove your ground up weed. The weed is much easier to roll with and allows for a smother smoke.

Welcome to How to Roll A Joint

I have put this site together to help people find good information on How to Roll a Joint. There is lots of information out there but not all in one place. This site is the ultimate Joint Rolling guide for beginners and those of you who want to take your joint rolling to the next level.

I started smoking at the tender age of 14, after discovering my mum toked (found weed and papers in her bedroom one day) I didn’t feel the need to hide it from my family and as such feel I developed a healthier relationship with marijuana.

I actually don’t smoke that often anymore but during my teens and college years was a total pot head (I was studding art, so it actually kinda help me : ), but I used to have nightly sessions with my friends and our basic goal, apart from getting high, was to see who could roll the best joints – I mean perfect. Who could use the least amount of paper (the back flip joint) who could create the perfect cone, with not a single crease in the paper, who could roll the longest fattest bad boy on a daily basis.

I don’t smoke as much now, but I still simply love rolling perfect and creative joints. Its an art form, not far off from origami……Marijuana Origami. I hope this site helps you take your joint rolling to the next level. Please feel free to contact me with nay questions, suggestions or cool pictures of joints you have rolled. Happy Toking!
